The Royal Armouries can trace its history back 700 years in the Tower of London. In July 1323, John Fleet was appointed as 'keeper of the part of the king's wardrobe in the Tower of London'. This marked a key development of the Privy Wardrobe, and the Tower of London into a place of manufacture and storage of arms, armour, and artillery.

We opened in 1995 as home to the national collection of artillery, with over 350 big guns and historic cannon on display. Covering nearly 19 acres and now fully restored, Fort Nelson sits majestically on top of Portsdown Hill, with amazing views of the Solent and the Meon Valley.

On the Monday 10th April 1916 the entire White tower housing new displays of the Tower Armouries' Collection on all floors was opened to the public. For the curator Charles ffoulkes it was literally a red-letter day as he recorded. Today, that museum is known as the Royal Armouries and the collection has spread across three sites: the Tower.
